Amaechi orders probe of maritime academy over N18bn remittances

Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi has ordered a probe into the financial activities of the Maritime Academy of Nigeria (MAN), Oron, Akwa Ibom State and N18 billion remittances to the institution by the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) in the last five years. Amaechi gave the order following allegations of financial recklessness and large scale fraud leveled against the academy’s rector, Joshua Okpo.

Thugs kill Lagos Danfo driver over loading fee

A 30-year-old Lagos driver, Samuel Adamo, Adamo, who was married with three wives and five children, was stabbed to death in Oshodi,  Lagos State. He was said to have been attacked in one of the motor parks in the Oshodi-under-bridge area, while calling passengers into his bus. It was learnt that some motor park thugs aka agbero, had approached him for a ‘loading fee’, but the deceased allegedly declined payment, saying there was no passenger in his bus yet.

A Chinese woman aka ‘Tiger Mom’ had a six-month prison term upheld by a local court, which ruled that she had gone “too far” for flogging her foster son over unfinished homework. Legal experts say the case has shed light on the controversial practice of physical punishment in Chinese families to encourage young children to excel. The case broke in April after widely shared pictures on the Internet showed a boy, known only by his surname Shi, with raw red welts criss-crossing his back.

A baby was baked to death in an oven by her toddler brother and sister after they were left alone at home. The twin three-year-olds watched as 19-month-old J’zyra Thompson kicked the oven door after they made it “hot”, court documents claim. Mum Racquel Thompson and her boyfriend had gone out to fetch a takeaway pizza and a prescription, leaving four kids under the age of five in the flat without telling a grandmother who lived in the same block.

Buhari appoints Aliu Aziz as new NIMC DG

Yesterday, President Buhari approved the appointment of Engineer Aliyu Aziz Abubakar, as the new director general and Chief Executive Officer of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC). The new DG was a pioneer staff of NIMC and the director, Information Technology/ National Identity Database department of NIMC before he retired in 2014. He holds a B.Eng in Civil Engineering and M.Sc in Structural Engineering with Specialty in Computer Aided Design from the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria.

Facebook came under fire for a perceived Western bias when it activated Safety Check after the Paris attacks, with critics noting that terrorist attacks in the Middle East, Africa, and Asia hadn't previously warranted its deployment.
